Nawabzadi’s Painting inspires Nazrul Islam

………..Meherbanu Khanam (daughter of Nawab Ahsanullah) sent two of her paintings to the monthly Moslem Bharat. This monthly literary journal began publication from Kolkata in April-May, 1920. Bengali Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam was inspired by one of the paintings and wrote the poem Kheya Parer Toroni(The Ferry Boat) on it. Nazrul’s poem and Meherbanu’s painting were published on the 4th issue of the journal in the Shravan of Bengali year 1327 (July-August 1920).This was the first painting by a Bengali Muslim woman to be published. ……..

    Thanx for doing the piece on my Great-Grand Mother, and Ammi
    says thanx too, for writing about her Daadi.

    The foto where it shows her painting / sketching with charcoal,
    could be the painting of a steamer which used to ply between Dhaka & Calcutta, on which Ammi and her family would goto Calcutta, for the Durga Puja Holidays before 1947.

    This painting of the steamer might be the one, which inspired Qazi Nazrul Islam Sahib.

    Ammi had 3 paintings of her Dadi’s , but which were lost, when her family had to leave Dilkusha in 1961…..
