Dhaka Mayoral Candidate Irad Ahmed Siddiky seeks DNF Endorsement

July 26, 2008

Dear Friends and Members of the Dhaka Nawab Family,

The Nawab family of Dhaka was very close to our family. My Great-grandfather, Khan Bahadur Kazimuddin Ahmed Siddiky, the Zamindar of Baliadi, was a close friend of Nawab Sir Salimullah and they led the deputation to Lord Hardinge for the founding of the Dhaka University.

Nawab Hasan Askari was a contemporary of my father and Nawab Habibullah was a contemporary of my Grandfather. I have heard from my father about the graveyard of Nawab Sir Salimullah in Begum Bazar and if I am elected the Mayor of Dhaka, Inshallah I will make sure that it is declared and maintained as a landmark of our city.

I appeal to your community and the Dhaka Nawab family to vote for me for Mayor in the forthcoming elections.

               Best Wishes,

Paribagh mosque of Nawab Salimullah Demolished

Plundering of heritage

Daily Star 2008-07-24

Mahbubur Rahman Professor of Architecture, North South University

THIS is in response to several recent incidents regarding loss of architectural heritage of a city poised to celebrate the fourth centenary of being a capital city.

The 103 years old Paribagh mosque built by Nawab Salimullah had also just been demolished, and I didn’t see any report on this. ……

However, the greatest culprit is the Department of Archaeology, the official custodian of heritage structures. They must be blamed for the collapse of Ahsan Manzil gate as they allowed encroachments on the already dilapidated structure instead of protecting it.

Buildings and monuments that reflect high points in human achievement, symbolizing a particular civilization, a significant development, or an historic event, acquire a greater significance in our cultural and national life and warrant continuance. These possess great emotional value as symbols of our cultural identity in addition to architectural, aesthetic and historic values.
Architecture, an expression in material form of a society’s social, economic, technological and cultural achievements, gives a vivid picture of it at a point in history in a particular location. Preservation of architectural works is, therefore, of immense significance as a means of cultural heritage preservation for a society that values its past. The older section of cities, or significant buildings, must be held in trust for future generations; without this a city is like a human being without a soul.

Various organizations and groups are now clamoring to be in the forefront of the celebration of 400 years of the city, without caring for an authentic history or for saving the ancient edifices that are the material evidence of our past. Architecture, as a vehicle of cultural expression and experience, becomes a veritable document in absence of adequate historical sources and writings — a common denominator linking past to the present and to the future. Let’s save our architectural heritage.

The wooden ceiling of the gate of Ahsan Manzil collapsed

July 21, 2008

Picture courtesy : Picture 1-3 by Mohammed Talha ,8th picture is taken by Syed Sagar from Nawab BariThe wooden ceiling of the gate of Ahsan Manzil in Old Dhaka collapsed on the 21st of July 2008.
Here is the special feature edited by Anas Khwaja

1872 :Background History
Abdul Ghani, the nawab of Dhaka built the Nohbat Khana presently known as Nawab Bari Gate in 1872 during repairs of the Ahsan Manzil. The 136-year-old archway is 15 feet wide and 30 feet high. This is situated on the Isampur Road and on the northern side of the Ahsan Manzil palace.

The literal meaning of Nohbat Khana or Naqqar Khana is Drum House. A costly Portuguese Band Party was maintained by the Nawab Family. They entertained the guests on festive occasions with their European tunes from the Nohbat Khana. The last time the band played was during the visit of Lord Curzon. Later on the band was disbanded due to financial difficulty.

The once beautiful gate made of brick and lime on the northern side of the palace, edging the Islampur market, fell into ruin only because of neglect, although it is archeologically protected under the Antiquities Act, 1968. Many banners are hanging with the weed-covered, peeling structure.

October 19 1985
The National Museum proposed to acquire additional lands measuring 7 kathas in order to widen the Ahasanullah Road from Islampur.
November 3 1985; Acquisition
The govt acquired Ahsan Manzil and adjacent land measuring 5.6506 acres through martial law act #4/1985 from Court of wards. Construction and the repair job were assigned to the Ministry of Works.
Noverber 4 1986 :Municipal Market
.6886 acre land was reassigned to make a municipal market through Martial law promulgation number 10. Thus the master plan to renovate the Nawabbari Gate got buried under the selfish act of the mayor and the few opportunists who got shops allotted in their names for few takas.

September 26.2003: Nawab Bari gate defaced : Daily Star
Islam Plaza owners of a shopping mall have demolished part of the historic Nawab Bari gate to the Ahsan Manjil in Old Dhaka to clear space for the multi-storey commercial building in an alleged underhand dealing with some officials of the archaeology department.
The archeologically protected archway lost its left side to construction of the shopping mall that began two years ago or so. To the right of the shopping complex stands another market, and several shops were constructed at the foot of the.
“They (market owners) did not seek permission from the archeology department for construction. We came to know about it but could not stop construction,” said Dewan Delwar Hossain, director of the archeology department. He reasoned out that the archeology department is too understaffed and cash-strapped to protect the site.
A notice of the archeology department bans any change, damage and graffiti on the archway and warns violators of a maximum punishment of one year in jail. Still, the owners of the shopping mall went ahead with their plan.
“We are worried. It may collapse anytime. Sometimes, the government officials visit the archway, but no repair was done yet,” said a clothes trader who has a shop near the site.

January 2008 :Moulvi Abdullah Welfare Trust
In the Q&A session of the annual meeting Syed Rehan Hussain raised the topic of repairing the Nohbat Khana. He mentioned that the Nawab bari gate is on the road with Daag number 720 which belongs to the MAWT. The secretary assured him that the Nawabbari Gate is now under the control of the Archeology Department. On behalf of the locals he will write to the newspapers drawing govt’s attention in this regard.

Department of Archaeology
As per the architects and conservationists-incompetence, poor management and lack of institutional capacity, skilled manpower and proper legal framework are some reasons holding back the Department of Archaeology (DOA).

Over the years the Department has consistently ignored and overlooked hundreds of historical sites in the city on the excuse of lack of funds and manpower.
DOA is unable to protect even those sites listed as protected.

Whenever the DOA was allocated funds to preserve historical sites, in most cases the money was spent to demolish the old structures, experts alleged. I hope DOA will not seal the fate of the Nohbat Khana through demolition. If we allow it to be destroyed then we will remain accused in the eyes of the next generation.
The Cloth Merchant Community
The place adjacent to the Nawabbari gate has grown into a major business centre because of its close proximity to the waterway. The two sides of the roads are jam packed with cloth stores. The local business community, especially the Bikrampur Bostro Baybsayi Somity can play a vital role in the reconstruction project. They need the mindset that businesses should payback the society when needed. The merchants had earlier transformed the Nawab Bari Jame Masjid. It is a proven fact in Bangladesh that most of the development initiative was taken on private instead of the public sector.

ConclusionNow it is high time that the family members, environmentalists, architects, conservationists and the business community come together. “The history of Dhaka is related to the Nawab palace and the Nawab Bari gate is a rare archway. It reminds us of our glorious past,” said Shamsul Wares, a leading architect. “We could not preserve much of our heritage due to lack of awareness. Now we need to protect the remnants.”

CLEANING DRIVE AROUND THE HERITAGE POND OF NAWAB BARI

July 18, 2008

The total area around the heritage pond of Nawab Bari had been so suffocating that the residents specially older ones and children had every moment risk of facing accidents. There were numerous unauthorized shops stalled on both side of road around pond, some portion of it became KATCHA BAZAR some portion of the same became playground and some of it became hawkers market. Some owners of houses took the opportunity of grasping the drain, made for the clearance of sewerage, and built an outside shop and rent them to outsiders. This was going on for the last 30 years and as a result Nawab Bari turned into a day night bazaar. The total environment became poisonous. There was none to bell the cat and at this stage, Maulvi K. Abdullah Welfare Trust felt its humanitarian duty and came forward to weed out all the unauthorized permanent and temporary shops in the vicinity of pond area. The approached the residence first and took their approval in this regards. The residence most graciously consented on such a move then the approach the law and order authorities at height level and then the local THANA moved. On 26TH of May 2008 afternoon the Assistant Commissioner of Police with O.C Kotwal with their contingent arrived at pond and moved round and found that almost all the shops around the area housed unauthorized . All of the shop owners were directed to vacate their place by 24 hours. The whole of the community enthusiastically welcomed the police and mainly the NAWAB BARI SANSHAD BOYS came forward to help the trust in uprooting the unauthorized shops. The law and order authority also appreciated the move taken by the NAWAB BARI SANSHAD BOYS .Then Maulvi K. Abdullah Welfare Trust felt the necessity of organizing the local youngsters to eradicate all types of antisocial elements in the Nawab Bari by making a voluntary force to look after the future peace, tranquility and environmental safety of the area . NAWAB BARI SANSHAD suggested to form a team named ”THE VOLUNTEERS” and Maulvi K. Abdullah Welfare Trust outlines a guideline under which this ”THE VOLUNTEERS” will perform their activities. All kinds of drugs to be prohibited and first of all the members of ”THE VOLUNTEERS” will say TAUBA TO ALL DRUGS. In this connection Nawab Bari Sanshad hold a welcome party at the top of the house of life trustee K.M .Arzoo.All the MURABBIES and the Trustees were invited at the welcome party. Mr K Mahamoodi, Mr K Iqbal, Mr K Motahar, Mr K Khawar Wasim, Mr Ahasanul Haq Bhola, Mr SA Ishaque (Chairman Of Trust) and Mr Najmul Haque (Secretary Of Trust) spoke on this occasion.Veterans all applauded the move taken by trust and emphasized on the fact that such a move must have its permanent effect on the area and environment and the road around must remain free for movement in all days to come. The secretary in his deliberation said that all has been done is not the credit of Maulvi K. Abdullah Welfare Trust or any of its members but the credit goes to all because of the fact that in this crisis we all become one, and if this oneness is restored things will remain normal or otherwise if this unity fails the things will again become as before . As such he advice the volunteers to uphold unity and brotherhood among all and move towards all goodness .
