Plassey Day today:Friday, 22 Jun 2007

The historic ‘Plassey Day’ will be observed in Bangladesh today, On this day (June 23) in 1757, the glorious sun of national independence set in Plassey on the bank of Bhagirathi river.The intrigues of the East India Company coupled with the betrayals by close associates of Nawab Sirajuddowla brought an end to the rule of Nawab and established British rule.

Although the centre of this incident was Murshidabad, Calcutta, Kashimbazar and Plassey, some places in Dhaka bear memories of the historic Plassey. The Nawab Sirajuddowla park in front of Nawab Yusuf Market in old Dhaka is very much there. The park was established in memory of the hero of the Plassey tragedy and great patriot Nawab Sirajuddowla. Nawab Salimullah contributed to the establishment of the park.

Obituary: Industrialist Javed Hassan (s/o Zebun Apa) passes away suddenly, today 1 June 2007

Today Singapore time Friday June 1, at 1.45 A.M. my beloved brother Javed Hassan, 2nd son of late Al-haji Dr. Abdul Mannan and Zebunnessa Begum passed away at an hospital in Singapore. (In-nal, lil-lahey’ wain’nal..lil-lahey rajayun) He was 58 years old.

His wife Nadira Begum, daughter of late Khawja Maqbul and Mrs. Dilara Begum  was at his hospital bed site, holding his hand as he went to eternal sleep. Mr. Javed Hassan’s three sons Shiblee Hassan , Ibrahim Hassan (Piploo) and Jaawad Omar Hassan was on their way to Singapore and expected there today.

His body will be flown back to Dhaka, Bangladesh for burial next to my mother and father at Begum bazar kabarstan after Namaz-e-Janaza.

Beside being a successful businessman and a leading industrialist of 1980’s and 1990’s. My beloved brother will be remembered as one of the most generous’ kind and simple human being. He helped not hundreds but thousands of mostly poors, both within the nawab family as well as outsiders. He never refused anyone until his last day.

We pray to almighty Allah for his departed soul to be in peace and a place in Jannat-ul-Ferdaus for him.
