DC Tanveer Transferred to Police Headquarters in Dhaka

May 11, 2007

hasina-returns.jpg Dhaka May 08 Thousands of people welcomed Sheikh Hasina’s return from London after 52 days’ foreign visit by chanting various slogans, as the ex-PM came home following the lifting of restriction earlier imposed by the caretaker government on her return.

Four police officials, including Uttara zone Deputy Police Commissioner (DC) Tanveer Haider Chowdhury (grandson of Khwaja Musharraf of Deen Brothers and son of Haseeba Begum) have been reprimanded for lax duty while some 3,000 people were sued for violating emergency rule in a backlash against the street celebration of Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina’s homecoming.

Earlier on the 14th of February, then SP of Jaipurhat, Tanveer had been transferred as DC to Dhaka Metrpolitan police.

Tanvir opted for the Police Service after appearing in the Bangladesh Civil Service exams sometime during the early 90s. He is the only member of the Dhaka Nawab Family to be serving in the Police service at this time.

Farooq Sobhan appointed Special Envoy

May 5, 2007

fs1.gif  Farooq Sobhan (great grandson of Nawabzadi Bilquis Banu), former Foreign Secretary of Bangladesh, yesterday left Dhaka for Washington on a fortnight long visit to USA as Special Envoy of Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed.

A veterans diplomat and President of Bangladesh Enterprise Institute, Farooq Sobhan will meet policymakers of the US State Department, Senators, Congressmen and top officials of non-government institutions during his stay in the USA.

He is likely to call on US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in Washington.

Besides, he is scheduled to meet Under Secretary of States Nicholas Burns, Assistant Secretary Richard A Boucher and senior policymakers of the US State Department.

Farooq Sobhan will also meet influential Senator Hilary Clinton and Chairman of the Bangladesh Caucus Congressman Joseph Crowley.

Diplomatic observers in Dhaka are attaching importance to Farooq Sobhan’s diplomatic mission to the USA against the backdrop of the recent global media hypes centring the debate on status of the two former Prime Ministers—Begum Khaleda Zia and Sheikh Hasina—and increasing western pressure for the early elections.
